Yay, Server Move!
Jan 13th, 2010 by Matthew

Now that I’ve moved to a new city, minus a static IP, I decided to stop hosting WikiForAll on a computer sitting at my feet and instead move it to a proper VPS somewhere in the USA. This hopefully means a faster site, more reliable site, and better speeds for everyone! Yay!

There’s still a lot to get done, and I’m working full-time now, so it’s taking time. But hey, it’ll get there!

New Comic
Nov 2nd, 2009 by Matthew

Hello everyone!

I randomly decided to do something strange last night. I decided to try my hand at Garrys Mod ragdoll posing. The results of this first effort are already available. I’ve named the comic “The Intermission” as it really is just that: an intermission between the regularly scheduled Confabulation comic series.

I should probably note that the comic intentionally has absolutely no story and really makes no sense at all. It’s more or less dipping my toes into the world of creating a Garrys Mod scene. Future comics I make will naturally make a lot more sense and probably have some sort of plot.

And on that note, James and I are now pretty much done with university for the year, so we’re celebrating with a nice, easy game of OpenTTD.

Seasons are changing!
Sep 9th, 2009 by Matthew

Yes, that’s right, it’s now September. Don’t ask me where on earth August went, I tried asking it but I was told I’d have to wait until next year. What does this mean? It means summer approaches. Yes, that’s right, summer. Not winter. The southern hemisphere rocks!

And as such, I’m finally able to don the good old flip-flops. I hate myself for calling them that, but if I say thongs, I’ll probably get owned by half of America. Did I just make a judgement call based on a stereotype? No, you’re just imagining it. Move along now.

Now, summer brings with it two things. First: heat. Second: more heat. I dunno about anyone else, but I like the heat. If it gets too much, I just turn on a fan or jump in the pool. None of this “wear more jumpers” business (it never works!)… This summer is extra special because for the first time ever I haven’t been at high school all year. So I get even more time to relax, enjoy the heat, and generally just do awesome things.

Such as walk on stinking hot roads without shoes, run across stinking hot sand at beaches, swim in the ocean, swim in a swimming pool that’s warm from nothing more than the sun’s heat, enjoy a barbeque on the deck, and most importantly, eat pie.

Welcome to Australia.

Cameos! \=D/
Jul 30th, 2009 by Matthew

With the latest comic out, we find a totally new character shoved into the spotlight without a script, or makeup, or much foresight at all…

That’s right, I make an appearance in today’s comic! I even get to take my normal role of actually making James do something.

A true win for all, I reckon. Last I heard there’s more comics coming your way, so stay tuned!

We’re Hosting Apocalypses!
Jun 27th, 2009 by Matthew

That’s right – our Left 4 Dead servers ready to be advertised!

After several weeks of having them all up publicly as a gauge for their use we’ve decided they’re definitely a keeper. We even play in them ourselves every now and then.

We are currently running two servers. If you want to use them, join the WikiForAll group on Steam and join a community group server in-game. You’ll see the two Left 4 Dead servers available for you to join.

For support, or if you want to ask something about the servers, to report abuse, or just to chat, you can head on over to the forums.

For the rest of us…
Jun 26th, 2009 by Matthew

Hi everyone!

While James is heading down South to go to Melbourne, I’m not. So what that means is that I have a fortnight to get awesome at TF2, play with the wiki, and generally just live.

One of the biggest things you’ll see over this weekend is a new Wordpress theme for this blog. We’re a bit sick of the discontinuity shown in the styles we have lying around, so we’re going to install a new theme which follows a bit closer to the WikiForAll styles.

I’ll also be updating core software that runs the site and writing in some new behaviour for the front page of WikiForAll. If all goes well, you won’t know anything’s different.

All that means if things look different or act differently I’m in the middle of making changes and it’ll be fixed within 24-48 hours.

James will not be away from internet down in Melbourne (he’d die) so he’ll also be updating the site semi-regularly over the next fortnight. With any luck that means I don’t have to make stuff up :)

We Got Game!
May 19th, 2009 by Matthew

Hi everyone!

Just letting you all know, we’ve finally ironed out the last couple of problems we were having with our game servers, so it’s safe to advertise them now!

We run a Team Fortress 2 dedicated server at 202.63.42.160:27001, and a Synergy (Half-Life 2 Mod) dedicated server at 202.63.42.160:27000. We’re planning on extending this in the future to also have a Left 4 Dead dedicated server running.

Feel free to use them as much as you want. The TF2 server has a standard map rotation, plus “cp_follower”. It’s used semi-regularly for clan practice, so if you can’t get in because you need a password, you might have to come back later.

Enjoy!

Birthdays!
May 2nd, 2009 by Matthew

WikiForAll first went live on the 30th of October 2007. Since then, it’s changed a lot – we have a blog, comics, and a lot more content.

And it’s already May 2009. We won’t the cliched question “Where did the year go?”, but rather “Where’d the past year and a half go?”. So this time, we’re actually going to be organised for WikiForAll’s second birthday. It’ll be a celebration of all the good and bad times the site’s been through. It’ll also be a time where we release some huge changes to the site.

Watch this space for more information as the year goes on!

Our Comics… Quality or Quantity? We give you neither!
Apr 28th, 2009 by Matthew

Well, it’s Tuesday night, 11:40 PM, and I’m  blogging.

Anyways, I think it should be mentioned that this month’s comic shows several things about our resident artist aka James. I happen to notice he recently blogged talking about doing an arty subject. I must say, considering the latest comic, it’s for the best.

Back on topic now…

Firstly, the comic does actually have the important information that makes it “ours” – our site in the bottom right corner under the 4th (5th?) panel.

I feel that the question this comic begs is, was James trying for a new abstract art competition, had he had far too many energy drinks, or has he lost his trusty Corel Draw with it’s automatic circles and fill?

Unless the point of the entire comic was to totally point out how blessed we really are to get coloured, antialiased (and frankly, quite shiny :P ) comics. Which I can imagine James doing.

However, now that that’s off my chest… James will back me up when I say the real reason this month’s comic is relatively awful is because the previous month’s comic was awesome enough to make up for at least two months.

For those unlucky enough to have missed out, here is the awesome comic:

Awesome comic

And here is this month’s comic:

Not so awesome

Not so awesome

And now I’ve had my midnight rant. <3

WikiForAll’s First Social Experiment!
Mar 3rd, 2009 by Matthew

Ladies and gentlemen,

We present to you the first ever WikiForAll social experiement. We decided we wanted to know what’d happen if everyone was given full access to a forum (not adminstrator access, merely the same as any old moderator). So we thought “Why not?” and made a forum where every user – including those who haven’t registered – have full access to all the forum features.

You can get yourself in on the unrestricted forum right here: http://www.wikiforall.net/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=33. We highly suggest you take care because we’re certainly not moderating anything there (defeats the purpose).

Go ahead, knock yourselves out by fiddling with the forum, and by all means, have fun!

- Matthew

EDIT: Also, we now have an IRC server – wikiforall.net (ports 6665-6669, take your pick). Feel free to join and say hello. Keep in mind that there are actually rules in the IRC server (unlike the subforum mentioned previously)… We hope you’ll take the time to join in and encourage some conversation (how else does a relatively unpopular and unknown server become popular?).
